Let’s Talk About Your Jeans

Look, I’m gonna be honest here. I have a problem with your jeans. Not you personally, of course. I don’t know you. But I know your jeans. Or rather, I know the story behind your jeans. And it’s not pretty.

I’m Maria, by the way. I’ve been editing fashion features for 22 years. I’ve seen trends come and go. I’ve watched designers rise and fall. I’ve even worn a pair of acid-wash jeans in public (it was 1994, okay?). But nothing, nothing, has frustrated me more than the fashion industry’s completley messed up relationship with denim.

Here’s the Thing About Denim

Denim is basically the backbone of casual fashion. It’s the uniform of the world. But here’s the dirty little secret: making those jeans is a disaster for the planet. We’re talking 2,000 gallons of water for one pair. That’s more than most people drink in their entire lives.

About three months ago, I was at a conference in Austin. I sat next to a woman named Lisa who worked for a sustainable fashion NGO. She told me, “Maria, the denim industry is one of the biggest polluters out there. And it’s only getting worse.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.

I asked her what we can do about it. She said, “Education. Policy changes. Consumer demand.” So, basically, everything.

But What Can One Person Do?

I get it. You’re not gonna stop wearing jeans. Neither am I. But here’s the thing: you can make better choices. And frankly, it’s not that hard.

First, let’s talk about buying less. I know, I know. It’s tough. But hear me out. Do you really need 214 pairs of jeans? Probably not. I had a friend named Marcus who swore by his single pair of perfectly fitted Levi’s. He said, “Maria, one great pair beats 20 okay pairs any day.” And he was right.

Second, buy better. Look for brands that are making an effort. There are companies out there using less water, less chemicals, and more recycled materials. It’s not perfect, but it’s a start. And hey, if you’re gonna wear jeans, you might as well feel good about it.

Third, take care of what you have. Wash your jeans less. Use cold water. Air dry them. It’s not rocket science, people. But it makes a difference. I learned this the hard way when I shrunk my favorite pair of vintage Levi’s in the dryer. Lesson learned.

And Now, a Word About Thrifting

I gotta digress for a sec. Thrifting is not the answer to everything. I know, I know. It’s trendy right now. But here’s the thing: thrifting is only as good as the options available. And let’s be real, most thrift stores are full of fast fashion castoffs. So, it’s not exactly saving the world.

But, and this is a big but, if you find a great pair of vintage jeans, snag them. They’re already made, they’ve already used their resources. It’s the ultimate in recycling.

Where Do We Go From Here?

I’m not sure. Honestly. I think we need to see some real changes in the industry. And that’s not gonna happen overnight. But we can start by demanding more from the brands we love. And by loving the brands that are doing it right.

Oh, and one more thing. If you’re looking for more info on sustainable fashion, check out the latest on education news policy changes. They’ve got some great resources.

Anyway, that’s my rant. I’m gonna go try to find a pair of jeans that didn’t destroy the planet. Wish me luck.
